Who We Are

TintypesDigital New Media & Infrastructure Technology Solutions is a partnership that combines the creative energies of Michael Clark, Beth Lowe, and John Selig.

Michael Clark is a seasoned enterprise technologist, having spent some 25 years working in the field in a variety of IT contexts and roles.

Michael’s earliest forays into the world of technology took place in academia, where he learned first to think about the human, social, economic, and historical side of the technology equation. Somewhat counterintuitively, he then moved on to corporate IT, where he learned the craft of this often arcane world with early positions in systems administration and operational support. Those first jobs in turn led to more advanced infrastructure engineering and management engagements, and to a variety of increasingly complex technology projects in the medical devices manufacturing sector that took him from the U.S. to Germany to Canada and back again.

In the mid-90′s, Michael began what was to be a nearly 15 year engagement with the financial services industry.  There, he built, managed, and developed large, nationally-dispersed teams of technicians and equally distributed, enterprise-scale technology infrastructure installations.  During his last five years in this sector, he focused entirely on developing enterprise platform architecture solutions and strategies.  He escaped, with his sense of humor still mostly intact, during the “Great Recession” winter of 2008-09.

Michael co-founded TintypesDigital in 2009 in order to continue his engagement with technology in new ways: by leading an independent consultancy that operates at the intersection of artistic and intellectual creativity and the technology frameworks that enable their expression. TintypesDigital thus seeks to make these enabling tools accessible to people and institutions that often cannot afford the budgetary luxuries of larger enterprises: small-to-mid-sized companies, healthcare providers, educators and their institutions, non-profit organizations, and individuals from all walks who look to technology to help solve their particular business, organizational, or personal challenges.

Beth Lowe is a writer, editor, photographer, educator, social media maven, mobile device enthusiast, Macintosh devotee, and a specialist in the use of adaptive technologies for people with disabilities.  She is also a co-founder of TintypesDigital.

BethFrom her earliest days, Beth showed a distinct affinity for the modes and methods of creative expression. Her utterly unintended and unexpected journey into the world of technology began shortly after college, when she found herself working for the Human Resources department of a large, New York area financial services company. There she was introduced to the myriad wonders of working in an environment where business applications were served up by mainframe computers.  It was in that context that she developed a penchant for working with technology at a more human scale, and for leveraging platforms of a more flexible, open, and end-user inspired sort.

Beth’s technology journey continued with her work as the Director of Project Connections, a program for providing services to students with learning disabilities at Middlesex College in Edison, New Jersey. There Beth was responsible for designing and implementing a program of learning strategies that integrated adaptive technologies with specially-designed curricula. The program she designed, developed, and managed was honored with repeated awards of both Federal and state grant money, funds critical to maintaining the program’s excellence. It became a model of technologically-focused disabilities services programs in the state, and even now, several years later, maintains a national reputation that Beth was instrumental in establishing.

Since leaving the world of formal academia, Beth has focused her energies on the development, presentation, and management of online creative content.  Her role at TintypesDigital involves bringing her expertise to bear on the many challenges faced by non-technical enterprises and individuals, educators, not-for-profit organizations, and writers in particular, as they seek to develop credible and authentic web presence strategies.

John Selig is a web developer, sys admin, photographer, musician, recording engineer, writer, videographer, linguist, and teacher. It’s a rare thing in our age of hyper-specialization to meet a true polymath, but for a small agency such as ours, operating at the intersection of new digital media technologies, essential infrastructure, and creative expression, it’s exactly the right combination.

JD SeligJohn came to us from Harvard College, Class of 2009, where he concentrated in Visual and Environmental Studies, as well as in Computer Science, Psychology, and Japanese Studies. On the technology front, John’s expertise represents the latest in web development methods, bringing us added strength not only in XHTML and CSS, but also in Javascript, jQuery, PHP, XML, MySQL, and AJAX – the building blocks of today’s more dynamic web applications. John’s skills in these areas have been honed both in the private consulting realm and during several years of serving as a teaching fellow for beginning and advanced Computer Science courses at Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences and at Harvard’s Extension School. He’s also paid his dues on the front lines of technology service and support, working for a time in Harvard’s Information Technology division as a helpdesk jockey and as a student support supervisor.

John’s talents, as noted, are by no means limited to the realm of pure technology. While at Harvard, he also served as an Executive Arts Editor of The Harvard Crimson newspaper, wrote news copy and served as Lead Anchor, News Host, and Arts Correspondent for the WHRB campus radio station. Meanwhile, in the IT group, he graduated from taking support calls to serving as Multimedia Liaison and Graphic Designer.

John’s linguistic interests (he’s a student of French, Latin, and Japanese) took him to Japan on several occasions, and in 2007 led to a stint in Tokyo as recipient of Harvard’s prestigious Reischauer Fellowship.

Since graduating, John has continued to teach in the Extension School at Harvard. He has also worked as a freelance web developer, photographer, videographer, and recently joined Boston University as an Instructor at their Center for Digital Imaging Arts. Throughout, he has continued to develop and advance his creative technology skills. He’s fully versed in Adobe’s Creative Suite, fully comfortable in Windows and Linux environments, and has significant experience with audio engineering and video production on the Mac OSX platform, holding multiple “pro-app” certifications.

At TintypesDigital, John’s focus is on bringing all of these capabilities together. On the infrastructure side, we leverage his sys admin and cross-platform integration talents. On the web side, he helps us bring advanced web development and digital media projects to successful completion.
